01. The Closest Thing To Crazy

How can I think I’m standing strong,
Yet feel the air beneath my feet?
How can happiness feel so wrong?
How can misery feel so sweet?
How can you let me watch you sleep,
Then break my dreams the way you do?
How can I have got in so deep?
Why did I fall in love with you?

[CHORUS]
This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen,
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known,
I was never crazy on my own…
And now I know that there’s a link between the two,
Being close to craziness and being close to you.

How can you make me fall apart
Then break my fall with loving lies?
It’s so easy to break a heart;
It’s so easy to close your eyes.
How can you treat me like a child
Yet like a child I yearn for you?
How can anyone feel so wild?
How can anyone feel so blue?

[CHORUS]
This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen,
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known,
I was never crazy on my own…
And now I know that there’s a link between the two,
Being close to craziness and being close to you.

02. Nine Million Bicycles

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That’s a fact,
It’s a thing we can’t deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die.

We are twelve billion light years from the edge,
That’s a guess,
No-one can ever say it’s true
But I know that I will always be with you.

I’m warmed by the fire of your love everyday
So don’t call me a liar,
Just believe everything that I say

There are six BILLION people in the world

More or less
and it makes me feel quite small
But you’re the one I love the most of all

We’re high on the wire
With the world in our sight
And I’ll never tire,
Of the love that you give me every night

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That’s a Fact,
it’s a thing we can’t deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die

And there are nine million bicycles in Beijing
And you know that I will love you till I die!

03. What a Wonderful World

I see trees of green,
red roses too.
I see them bloom,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue,
And clouds of white.
The bright blessed day,
The dark sacred night.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow,
So pretty in the sky.
Are also on the faces,

Of people going by,
I see friends shaking hands.
Saying, “How do you do?”
They’re really saying,
“I love you”.

I hear babies cry,
I watch them grow,
They’ll learn much more,
Than I’ll ever know.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

Yes, I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

Oh yeah.

04. If You Were A Sailboat

If you’re a cowboy I would trail you,
If you’re a piece of wood I’d nail you to the floor.
If you’re a sailboat I would sail you to the shore.
If you’re a river I would swim you,
If you’re a house I would live in you all my days.
If you’re a preacher I’d begin to change my ways.

Sometimes I believe in fate,
But the chances we create,
Always seem to ring more true.
You took a chance on loving me,
I took a chance on loving you.

If I was in jail I know you’d spring me
If I was a telephone you’d ring me all day long
If was in pain I know you’d sing me soothing songs.

Sometimes I believe in fate,
But the chances we create,
Always seem to ring more true.
You took a chance on loving me,
I took a chance on loving you.

If I was hungry you would feed me
If I was in darkness you would lead me to the light
If I was a book I know you’d read me every night

If you’re a cowboy I would trail you,
If you’re a piece of wood I’d nail you to the floor.
If you’re a sailboat I would sail you to the shore.
If you’re a sailboat I would sail you to the shore

05. Piece by Piece

First of all must go
Your scent upon my pillow
And then I’ll say goodbye
to your whispers in my dreams.
And then our lips will part
In my mind and in my heart,
Cos your kiss
Went deeper than my skin.

Piece by piece
is how I’ll let go of you
Kiss by kiss
Will leave my mind one at a time
One at a time

First of all must fly,
My dreams of you and I,
There’s no point of holding on to those
And then our ties will break,
For your and my own sake,

Just remember,
This is what you chose

Piece by piece
Is how I’ll let go of you
Kiss by kiss,
will leave my mind one at a time
One at a time

I’ll shed like skin,
Our memories of lazy days,
And fade away the shadow of your face

Piece by piece
Is how I’ll let go of you
Kiss by kiss,
Will leave my mind one at a time
One at a time
One at a time
One at a time

06. Call Off The Search

I won’t spend my life
Waiting for an angel to descend
Searching for a rainbow with an end
Now that I’ve found you I’ll call off the search
And I won’t spend my life
Gazing at the stars up in the sky
Wondering if love will pass me by
Now that I’ve found you I’ll call off the search

Out on my own
I would never have known this world
That I see today

And I’ve got a feeling
It won’t fade away

And I won’t end my days
Wishing that love would come along
Because you are in my life where you belong
Now that I’ve found you I’ll call off the search

INTERLUDE

Now that I’ve found you I’ll call off the search
Now that I’ve found you I’ll call off the search

07. On the Road Again

Well I’m so tired of cryin’ but I’m out on the road again.
Well I’m so tired of cryin’ but I’m out on the road again.
I ain’t got nobody just to call my special friend.

You know the first time I travelled out in the rain and snow
In the rain and snow
You know the first time I travelled out in the rain and snow
In the rain and snow
I didn’t have no fellow, not even no place to go

And my dear mother left me when I was quite young
When I was quite young
And my dear mother left me when I was quite young
When I was quite young
She said “lord have mercy on my wicked one.”

Take a hint from me mama please don’t you cry no more
Take a hint from me mama please don’t you cry no more
Cause it’s soon one morning down the road I’m gone

But I ain’t going down that long and lonesome road
All by myself
But I ain’t going down that long and lonesome road
All by myself
If you ain’t comin’ with me I’m gonna take somebody else.

Well I’m so tired of cryin’ but I’m out on the road again.
I ain’t got nobody just to call my special friend.
I ain’t got nobody just to call my special friend.
I ain’t got nobody just to call my special friend.

08. Mary Pickford (used To Eat Roses)

Mary Pickford used to eat roses
Thought that they’d make her
Beautiful and they did
One supposes

Douglas Fairbanks, he was so handsome
He wore a mustache
Must’ve had much cash too
Worth a king’s ransom

Charlie Chaplin, he was invited
When these artists became united
When these artists became united

David Griffith worked as an extra
Then as a stagehand
Until they let him be
A director

Dave was brave, a mover and shaker
A true pioneer
He seemed to show no fear
A real film maker

Just like Chaplin he was invited
When these artists became united
When these artists became united

They tied the knot together
Groom and bride couldn’t hide their pleasure
They tried to pick fair weather
But love died and didn’t last forever

Mary Pickford used to eat roses
Thought that they’d make her
Beautiful and they did
One supposes

Douglas Fairbanks, he was so handsome
He wore a mustache
Must’ve had much cash too
Worth a king’s ransom

Charlie Chaplin, he was invited
When these artists became united
When these artists became united
When these artists became united

09. Spider’s Web

If a black man is racist, is it okay?
If it’s the white man’s racism that made him that way,
Because the bully’s the victim they say,
By some sense they’re all the same.

Because the line between,
Wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread,
From a spider’s web.
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.

I could tell you to go to war,
Or I could march for peace and fighting no more,
How do I know which is right,
And I hope he does when he sends you to fight.

Because the line between wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread from a spider’s web,
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.

Should we act on a blame?
Or should we chase the moments away?
Should we live?
Should we give?
Remember forever the guns and the feathers in time.
Because the line between wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread from a spider’s web,
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind

10. Thank You, Stars

Some call it faith, some call it love.
Some call it guidance from above.
You are the reason we found ours,
So thank you stars.

Some people think it’s far away,
Some know it’s with them everyday.
You are the reason we found ours,
So thank you stars.

There are no winds that can blow it away on the air,
When they try to blow it away ‘s when you know it will always be there.

To some it’s the strength to be apart,
To some it’s a feeling in the heart.
And when you’re out there on your own, it’s the way back home.

There are no winds that can blow it away on the air,
When they try to blow it away ‘s when you know it will always be there.
Some call it faith, some call it love.
Some call it guidance from above.
You are the reason we found ours,
So thank you stars.
Thank you stars,
Thank you stars,
Thank you stars

11. I Cried for You

You’re beautiful so silently
It lies beneath a shade of blue
It struck me so violently
When I looked at you

But others pass, the never pause,
To feel that magic in your hand
To me you’re like a wild rose
They never understand why

I cried for you
When the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper

I’ll cross the sea for a different world,
With your treasure, a secret for me to hold

In many years they may forget
This love of ours or that we met,
They may not know

how much you meant to me.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper

Without you now I see,
How fragile the world can be
And I know you’ve gone away
But in my heart you’ll always stay.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper
That beauty need only be a whisper

12. Tiger In The Night

You are the tiger burning bright
Deep in the forest of my night
You are the one who keeps me strong in this world

You sleep by the silent cooling streams
Down in the darkness of my dreams
All of my life I never knew
You were the dream I’d see come true
You are the tiger burning bright

I was the one who looked so hard I could not see.
Now I could never live without the love you give to me.

I lived like a wild and lonely soul,
Lost in a dream beyond control.
You were the one who brought me home down to earth.

For you are the tiger burning bright
Deep in the forest of my night
All of my life I never knew
You were the dream I’d see come true
You are the tiger burning bright

13. When you taught me how to dance

When you taught me how to dance
Years ago with misty eyes
Every step and silent glance
Every move a sweet surprise

Someone must have taught you well
To beguile and to entrance
For that night you cast your spell
And you taught me how to dance

Light reflections in a lake
I recall what went before
As I give, I’ll learn to take
And to be alone no more

Other lights may light my way
I may even find romance

But I won’t forget that night
When you taught me how to dance

Cold winds blow
But on those hills you’ll find me
And I know
You’re walking right behind me

When you taught me how to dance
Years ago with misty eyes
Every step and silent glance
Every move a sweet surprise

Someone must have taught you well
o beguile and to entrance
For that night you cast your spell
And you taught me how to dance
And you taught me how to dance.

14. Toy Collection

I will not sell my toy collection
If i did i would weep
Who`s to say what you need and what you don`t
On a desert island they`re the things i`ll keep

Some children had their parents read them stories
Well i heard mine directly from the source
Captain kirk shared his tales and glories
While fighting a deadly force

Who`s to say when you get older
You don`t need a toy collection?
Who`s to say when you get older
That you have to follow convention?

Black beard told me of his troubled mother
And with his songs he`d sing me off to sleep
He said superman was my real father
And they gave me dreams that i still keep

Who`s to say when you get older
You don`t need a toy collection?
Who`s to say when you get older
That you have to follow convention?

Instrumental

Who`s to say when you get older
You don`t need a toy collection?
Who`s to say when you get older
That you have to follow convention?
That you have to follow convention?

15. Somewhere In The Same Hotel

Somewhere in the same hotel,
was it in the bar?
I saw you once, but I don’t know who you are
I don’t usually obsess, but I confess,
I wish I knew you well
All I know is, here I am and there you are,
somewhere in the same hotel

Somewhere in the same hotel,
yesterday we passed again
And I thought you looked my way
I don’t want for this to be a fantasy
But as far as I can tell,
you’re alone just like me, here at night,
somewhere in the same hotel

Maybe you’re in the next room?
Or just across the hall?
Maybe somebody’s waiting,
at home for you to call?

I’m yearning in the morning light,
of the dawning day
’cause we missed our chance,
and I have to go away
I don’t even know your name?
But all the same,
I hope you’re sleeping well,
if you’re still there all alone,
’cause I’m no longer,
somewhere in the same hotel

BBC Review

It seems a little strange that an artist who only appeared on the scene in 2003 should already be releasing a ‘best of’ album. Cashing in on ever-dwindling music sales and the Christmas cow are likely to be the sources of blame.

Opening with the song that made her famous, The Closest Thing To Crazy is the first of 14 previously recorded and three new Melua tracks. Taken from Katie’s three albums (Call Off The Search, Piece By Piece and Pictures) some songs are more instantly recognisable than others. Familiar haunts Nine Million Bicycles, Melua’s number one duet with Eva Cassidy of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World and Call Off The Search all feature. These three are by no means the collection’s highlights however.

Melua’s self-penned numbers, the socially-charged Spider’s Web and the gorgeously tender I Cried For You are the songs that, in fact, scream for attention. Both showcase Katie’s knack of storytelling and sumptuous, comforting vocal perfectly.

Of the new material, the collaboration between Melua and the man who discovered her, Mike Batt, on Two Bare Feet leaps out. The up-tempo, quick-step jazz is a welcomed step away from Katie’s comfort zone and serves her well.

Meanwhile the DVD bonus disc includes Katie’s recent 90-minute Rotterdam live show and Behind The Screens pre-concert footage. Neither of these shorts make The Katie Melua Collection worth purchasing, and if you’re already a devout fan, you’d be better off simply buying the new tracks of your choice. However, if you’re after an introduction to one of Britain’s key female solo artists, get your wallet out now
