The Closest Thing to Crazy

The Closest Thing to Crazy is Katie’s debut single and is also featured on her hugely successful album, Call Off the Search. The song appeared first in 1995 on Mike Batt’s album ‘Arabesque’.

The single was originally due out in January 2004, but was released a month early in an attempt by Terry Wogan to make it that year’s Christmas number one in the UK. The single reached only number ten in the UK charts.

However, owing to the success of the album reaching number one, the song climbed back into the top 20 during the January and February period, and resulted in obtaining Katie’s first nomination for the annual The Record of the Year prize on ITV1.

01. The Closest Thing To Crazy

How can I think I’m standing strong,
Yet feel the air beneath my feet?
How can happiness feel so wrong?
How can misery feel so sweet?
How can you let me watch you sleep,
Then break my dreams the way you do?
How can I have got in so deep?
Why did I fall in love with you?

[CHORUS]
This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen,
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known,
I was never crazy on my own…
And now I know that there’s a link between the two,
Being close to craziness and being close to you.

How can you make me fall apart
Then break my fall with loving lies?
It’s so easy to break a heart;
It’s so easy to close your eyes.
How can you treat me like a child
Yet like a child I yearn for you?
How can anyone feel so wild?
How can anyone feel so blue?

[CHORUS]
This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen,
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known,
I was never crazy on my own…
And now I know that there’s a link between the two,
Being close to craziness and being close to you.

02. Downstairs To The Sun

Can’t say what came over me
I wasn’t what I used to be
Hadn’t seen how I lost control
And I always thought that I was strong

But one night, one situation,
One sign, one devastation

[Chorus]
I could have said: no to the walk
Listened instead of just talked
And I dreamed that I had screamed
I could have run, down the stairs to the sun

It’s not what you did to me,
It’s the fact that I didn’t fight you back
And it seems I had lost my voice
The one that always made the right choice

’cause two nights, two situations,
Two signs, two devastations

[Chorus]
I could have said: no to the walk
Listened instead of just talked
And I dreamed that I had screamed
I could have run, down the stairs to the sun

But now the cup is no longer cold
As the rain trickles down I feel a bold
And time is calling me to set myself free
Concession is the key and knowing what you don’t see

[Chorus]
I could have said: no to the walk
Listened instead of just talked
And I dreamed that I had screamed
I could have run, down the stairs to the sun

03. Thank You, Stars

Some call it faith, some call it love.
Some call it guidance from above.
You are the reason we found ours,
So thank you stars.

Some people think it’s far away,
Some know it’s with them everyday.
You are the reason we found ours,
So thank you stars.

There are no winds that can blow it away on the air,
When they try to blow it away ‘s when you know it will always be there.

To some it’s the strength to be apart,
To some it’s a feeling in the heart.
And when you’re out there on your own, it’s the way back home.

There are no winds that can blow it away on the air,
When they try to blow it away ‘s when you know it will always be there.
Some call it faith, some call it love.
Some call it guidance from above.
You are the reason we found ours,
So thank you stars.
Thank you stars,
Thank you stars,
Thank you stars

Forget ! Forget ! Forget Mike Batt was a Womble…

The reason for the strange heading for this review is to convey the fact that this gem and another wonderful track on this single were written and produced by Mike ‘Womble’ Batt.

I first heard this song on the Royal Variety Show a week ago and was immediately hooked by the ladys voice and this wonderful song. I’d never heard of Katie Melua before but she deserves the kind of widespread recognition that say Dido enjoys.

The style is mainly acoustic based plaintive vocals. The two other tracks are not on the album making this purchase essential. Mike Batts ‘Thank you stars’ is on a par with the title track. Where has he been all these years and thank goodness he teamed up with this talented young artist.
